You can teach old timber new tricks

A beautiful old Queenslander in the heart of the western suburbs of Brisbane was in dire need of a bathroom update. This worker’s cottage style Queenslander has a lot of charm and i wanted to honour that feeling while still providing a modern look. Phoebe and Aiden were very much on the same page, “sleek and modern, without loosing warmth”. They have beautiful hardwood sliding doors in the house, so a closely matching timber look was required to tie the bathroom in to the rest of the house.

I suggested a timber top made from recycled materials would really ground the more modern aspects of this design. I laminated together some gorgeous hardwood recovered from railway sleepers and finished the top with a the help from the amazing M+L French Polishing team.

The bathroom is a cosy little room, which lead to some interesting challenges. A lack of storage was the main motivation for embarking upon this renovation. The location of the toilet prevented me from going down the route of a large vanity. So by taking the shaving cabinets all the way to the wall and keeping them very slim we were able to carve out more space for storage.

The Vanity is a slim cabinet wrapped in Polytec Polar White Gloss. The solid timber top is complimented with a beautiful square semi recessed bowl from Clark and chrome tapware. The shaving cabinets with mirror doors are surrounded in Laminex South West Jarrah. Push to open Blum hardware in the vanity unit keeps the overall look very minimal and sleek. Phoebe very sensibly specified pull handles on the mirrored doors keep finger marks off the glass.
