A bookworm’s delight

A beautiful Bardon Queenslander nestled in the shadow of Mt Coot-tha had been fitted out beautifully in a recent renovation. The new owners however found it lacking in one department in particular. The avid readers needed a sturdy bookcase to store their vast collection of books.

Picking up design prompts from the existing joinery in the living room a proud, handsome and delightfully old fashioned bookcase design was decided upon.

The bookcase is painted in white satin Two Pack paint. The 50mm wide vertical partitions and tall plinth give the joinery a solid and proud appearance. The bookcase is angled at both ends to help ease the transition into the joinery.

To compliment the lower portion of the joinery a large piece of solid Blackbutt was used as the top of the bookcase.

Eucalyptus pilularis goes by the common name blackbutt due to the tree's appearance after bushfire, where the buttress of the tree is darkened. It’s a very dense timber with beautiful natural highlights. It often has beautiful streaky gum veins and a lovely golden honey colour.

To match the bookcase a desk and floating shelves were also commissioned. The highlight of the joinery being an absolutely exquisite single slab of blackbutt as the desk top. Turning this cross section of a gorgeous gum into a desk built to last the test of time was an incredible honour.
