Transforming a Tricky Corner

When it comes to kitchen renovations, every project has its unique challenges and opportunities. Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a kitchen transformation that exemplified the delicate balance between form and function.

The client's existing kitchen had seen better days. The final push for the renovation came when their integrated fridge broke down, and no suitable replacement could be found. The kitchen's layout, particularly the tricky corner housing the fridge and pantry, posed a significant challenge, but also an opportunity for creative problem-solving.

In collaboration with the client on the kitchen redesign, our goal was to achieve a sleek, modern aesthetic that balances crisp lines with organic materials. We selected Polytec Black Ultramatt and Navurban Bungendore for the cabinet doors, offering a sophisticated and contemporary look. The countertops are crafted from Vanilla Noir, providing a striking yet durable surface for everyday use. Combined with the client's choice of gorgeous green handmade tiles and the bold incorporation of a still life tile mural, the result is an absolutely stunning and unique kitchen.

Updating the kitchen required addressing several specific needs. One of the biggest challenges was optimizing the corner space to fit the fridge, pantry, and appliance nook.

To optimize the tricky corner space, I utilized a Sige Materia pull out kidney shelf, an elegant solution that isn’t attached to the cabinet door. I prefer this type of hardware because attaching shelves/baskets to the door can often lead to misalignment over time due to weight pulling on the hardware.

Additionally, I incorporated a Blum Movento pull-out shelf and pocket door opening upwards for the appliance nook. This setup allows the nook to be concealed when not in use, and provides easy access for tasks like refilling coffee and water. By framing the nook with the same Navurban Bungendore material used elsewhere in the kitchen, I ensured a cohesive design that subtly directs attention to the hidden appliances, blending functionality seamlessly with aesthetic appeal.

This project underscores the importance of balancing aesthetic appeal with practical solutions. By incorporating thoughtful design and attention to detail, and collaborating closely with a bold client, we transformed a challenging space into a modern, functional, and beautiful kitchen.
